A giclee (zhee-CLAY) is a high-resolution reproduction done
on a special large format printer. Unlike the typical 4-color
desktop ink jet printers, these printers use 7-color pigmented
ink that resist fading and smudging for over 100 years. The
ink is sprayed onto the page, actually mixing the color on the
page to create ultra smooth colors.
Giclees are printed on all sorts of media from water color
paper and velvet to canvas. Giclees are superior to traditional
lithography in several ways. The colors are brighter, last
longer, and are so high resolution that they are virtually
continuous tone, rather than tiny dots.
Originally giclee's were designed as a proofing system for the
lithograph printing presses, but because of the limited color
gamut and the reduced quality these presses created, giclee
images are desired by galleries and are coveted by collectors
because of the high quality and typically small quantities that
are produced on these printers.
Giclees are produced from digital files, which allows for more
flexibility, faster turnaround and lower costs to our customers.
